bon iver - michicant

Bon Iver's first full-length, For Emma, Forever Ago, was one of the most raw, emotional records I'd heard in a long time. Compounded with the backstory that lead singer Justin Vernon had supposedly composed and recorded the album in isolation following a particularly difficult break-up, Emma became a tangible, relatable album of emotional release. These were feelings we've all had, but could only articulate in pillow punching or angry journal entries.

The follow-up to Emma is a self-titled LP set for release later in June. Following up an album that relied so heavily on emotional impact is no small task, but Vernon and crew seem to have done very well for themselves. One particular standout is "Michicant," whose incredibly obscure lyrics don't seem to detract from the song's mood.

Sonically, the song is marvelous. Three-part harmony throughout, softly strummed electric guitar in the background, minimalist drums, some melodica and a synth interlude. There isn't much to this song, but Bon Iver have made a habit of making the most out of what they've got. "Michicant" is no exception, and it stands as one of a number of excellent songs on what's sure to last as one of the best records of the year.
